Feverfew the forgotten herb
I have this beautiful flower growing amongst my herbs that was a mystery gift from the birds. I have enjoyed it spring after spring, not knowing what it truly was. And then one day my daughter told me she had taken its picture and researched it herself. She discovered it was feverfew and great for treating migraines. I was so excited to hear this because I suffer from migraines and have found it difficult to get much relief. I even have begun to get those much talked about auras. So I grabbed my trusty herb books and phone and began to look for more information on feverfew.
So here it is, feverfew. Beautiful right? It stinks just like any other daisy looking flower. But here is what I have learned about it so far. Studies have been done on it recently, within the last 40 years that is, and it is said to be excellent for treating migraines and fevers. Apparently, this plant had been used back in the early years of human life and then seemed to lose its luster. I wonder why. It seems that a lot of things have been replaced by synthetics or just plain forgotten about.
I decided to pick some and dry them to make a tincture with them. To do so I will fill a quart jar 1/2-3/4 full with chopped, dried flowers and leaves. I then fill the jar with the middle of the road, 40% vodka, and cover with plastic wrap and then the lid and ring. I let them soak in a dark area away from sunlight for 8 weeks. I then will strain the vodka and save in the same dark area in my pantry and will put some in my already mixed tincture bottle for daily use. I take 1 dropper full twice daily of my tincture mix.
I will update this blog when the tincture is ready, and when I start using it.
Keep brewing, keep cooking, and most definitely keep healing.
Cheers,
